Tethered Oral Tissue Release
TOTS stands for “Tethered Oral Tissues.” It refers to a group of conditions in which the oral tissues in the mouth are restricted or attached in a way that can affect oral functions and development. The two main conditions that fall under TOTS are tongue tie (ankyloglossia) and lip tie.
Types Of TOTS
Tongue Tie (Ankyloglossia)
This condition occurs when the strip of tissue (lingual frenulum) that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth is shorter or tighter than usual. As a result, the movement of the tongue may be restricted, impacting functions like breastfeeding, eating, speech, and oral hygiene.
Lip Tie
This condition involves a tight or thick band of tissue (labial frenulum) that connects the upper lip to the gum line. Lip tie can affect breastfeeding in infants and, in some cases, lead to spacing issues between the front teeth as the child grows.
TOTS Challenges
TOTS can be present at birth and may cause various challenges depending on the severity of the restriction. While some infants and individuals with TOTS may not experience significant difficulties, others may encounter problems with: breastfeeding, speech, oral hygiene, and even dental health.
